You will no doubt have heard that the new Labour Government has decided to remove the Winter Fuel Payment from most pensioners. Sadly, this is not the only damaging cut the government is proposing.
The Times has reported that the Prime Minister “could scrap the single-person council tax discount” in the Budget due on 30th October.
Currently, people receive 25% off their Council Tax bills if they live alone or with young adults in full-time education, student nurses or those with certain disabilities. Those living in band C properties who receive the discount pay £667 a year in Council Tax.
When questioned in Parliament and asked to rule out this change, the Prime Minister refused, saying: “I am not going to pre-empt the Budget. It will all be set out in due course”.
Under Labour’s rumoured proposals, single-person Council Tax bills would rise to £889 - a £222 yearly increase.
This is a change that would impact close to a third of Wandsworth residents – from elderly people living alone to first-time buyers in one-bedroom flats.
So far, our Labour councillors, Labour MP and Labour of Mayor of London have been silent on this threat.
Let us be clear: Wandsworth Conservatives oppose Labour’s 25% stealth tax hike. As your councillors, we’re keen to send a clear message demanding Labour drop these harmful proposals.
Time is short to record your opposition to this change – and we need your help.

Best wishes,
